Clean water and less use of firewood in Zimbabwe

As a member of the Alliance for Development and Climate, SÜLZLE compensates its CO₂ emissions with the support of VPA 146 Manicaland Safe Water in Zimbabwe, among others.

There, 32.7 % of people in rural areas do not have access to a clean water source. To obtain germ-free water, many people in Zimbabwe boil the water. The vast majority of the rural population depends on burning solid fuels for cooking, which is responsible for a large part of the country’s CO₂ emissions.

The company CO2balance has entered into a partnership with the local NGO Diocese of Mutare Community Care Programme (DOMCCP) to rehabilitate the ailing boreholes in the rural districts of Chipinge and Mutare and to strengthen sustainable structures at the community level. In order to manage and maintain the boreholes, DOMCCP works closely with the relevant governmental authorities, e.g. by providing training, technical support and implementing water quality surveys.

The project will support the provision of clean water using borehole technology to hundreds of households in Manicaland province in Zimbabwe. By providing clean water, the project will help households use less firewood during the water purification process, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion process.
